I am Rá – Fri – 29 Nov 2024
I AM RA, a powerful and reimagined telling of the Indian epic steeped in themes of love, lust, loyalty and conflict, is the feature production for SFA 2024.
This evocative showcase will run for three nights from November 29 till December 1 , 2024 at the Shantanand Auditorium, Kuala Lumpur.
Through a unique perspective, I AM RA explores the Ramayana’s legendary antagonist, Ravana, delving into his complex personality, motivations, and internal conflicts.
Typically, takes of the Ramayana is fixated on Rama, the story’s hero.
But here, we shift our gaze to Ravana—the ‘villain’—to explore the layers that make him more than just a demon king.
This production begins in Ravana’s final moments, where he faces existential questions in the liminal space between life and death, offering the audience a chance to glimpse the internal turmoil that mirrors the complexities within us all.
Often portrayed as a one-dimensional figure of evil, a less known fact is that Ravana was also a scholar, a warrior, and a devout follower of Lord Shiva.
This production invites the audience to see beyond the traditional black-and-white portrayals of good and evil, and to appreciate the layered humanity in Ravana’s character.
I AM RA brings this vision to life with a captivating mix of dance, drama, music, and vibrant set and costume design.
